Grocery Stores / Retailers
A large grocery store chain with thousands of stores and distribution centers spread across the U.S. needed to dramatically reduce its ecological footprint to achieve its aggressive sustainability goal. The retailer did not have the staff nor the experience to expand a handful of promising landfill diversion pilots across its operation and needed to maintain costs down.
Quest completed store assessments and calculated the retailer’s waste baseline. Based on the information received from the assessment, Quest developed and managed a host of integrated landfill diversion programs, which were incorporated across all stores. A program was designed to address the recycling of food waste, cooking oil, meat & seafood, cardboard, plastics as well as manage the remaining MSW.
Through the creation of an online portal that analyzes the efficiency of each sustainability initiative at every store, Quest has given the retailer the ability to track sustainability throughout its entire network. As a direct result of the partnership with Quest, the grocery chain was recognized by the EPA as a winner in three categories of the agency’s Food Recovery Challenge: Leadership, Innovation, and Education and Outreach.
Additionally, with the help of Quest, the retailer was able to:
- Prevent more than 277,000 metric tons of CO2 the same amount of emissions produced by nearly 54,000 cars over an entire year
- Recycle more than 27,000 tons of organics
- Recycle nearly 1,000,000 gallons of used cooking oil
- Recycle more than 5,500 tons of meat & seafood
