Food Waste Recycling Takes A Bite Out Of Sanctuary Food Budgets

Every day across the United States, animal sanctuaries offer large animals a safe haven from neglected and/or abusive past. In most cases animal sanctuaries operate as a 501(c)(3) not for profits, relying heavily on monetary donations from generous citizens and corporations in their local and surrounding community. These vital monetary donations enable the sanctuary to provide all kinds of care to their animals including health and food.

According to our own recycling program internal research, monthly sanctuary food budgets range from $30,000 to $100,000. That is a great deal of food, and cost! Monetary donations do go a long way towards helping feed these amazing animals, yet the food still constitutes a substantial portion of a sanctuary’s monthly expenses. Is there another way to help feed these awesome animals?

Participation in a food waste recycling program (with a network of local grocers/restaurants) offers animal sanctuaries the opportunity to continue to feed their animals and also reduce monthly food expenses. Remember, not all food waste is truly waste.

Feeding animals is the 3rd most preferred food recovery option on the EPA’s Food Recovery Hierarchy pyramid, behind source reduction and feeding hungry people. For the participating grocer donor(s), participating in the program offers an opportunity to reduce their (landfill) waste footprint. Aside from source reduction and feeding people, feeding animals is the third most preferred food recovery technique according to the U.S. EPA.
